Volunteering to help organizations, or charities can change your life for the better. You may not think it, or it may feel like it’s a lot more work than you want to do, but in reality, it’s quite amazing what you can get out of it. Here are a few things to think about for volunteering. We aren’t necessarily talking about helping a friend move their house for a box of pizza here, were talking about volunteering to help in the overall picture of making the world a better place.
You’re helping people
The most obvious thing, of course, is that you’re helping people that need it. Most charities or service organizations usually don’t have much of a budget, and they can always use help. If you’re on the other side of the table under one of those people that need help, you will understand how good it feels when there are people there to help you. So helping people out is bringing the world up by a little notch, and we need every notch we can.
It makes you feel good
When you help people and gives you a happy warm feeling inside. You may not be taking a paycheck home, and it may be hard work, but you’re doing it because it’s the right thing to do. Somehow that carries across into our hearts. So we get home, we can go to sleep tired, if will we have done something wonderful for the world.
Don’t just do it on holidays
When you volunteer, don’t just do it on Christmas and Thanksgiving, there is an overabundance of people that think that’s a wonderful thing to do and volunteer on those two holidays to help people. Unfortunately, there are so many people that want to do that, and feel good, though there are too many people to help and they have to turn people away. If you want to help, pick a normal day and one that is not a holiday. Any of the charities will thank you.
You can choose how you help
When you volunteer to help at a charity it doesn’t always mean that you’re going to be serving food at a food kitchen. It can be all sorts of things. you could be passing out flyers, or arranging tours, or doing a hundred other things. Making phone calls, there are so many different charity organizations that need help, that you can pretty much find anything that you need. So find something that you enjoy.
Use your skills
When you volunteer to help an organization, let them know what skills you have. If you have skills in cooking, then they would love for you to cook, and if you have skills in bookkeeping, I’m sure they need help in bookkeeping. If you drive, they might need people to drive people around. Let the charity know what your skills are, and what you’re good at, and they will tell you what they need and be happy for you to help.
There are so many different charities in the world and so many different ways you can help people. There’s an old saying that it’s best better to give than to receive. And in this case, it’s very true. when you volunteer you don’t have to spend all the time doing it, even only a couple of hours a week, or even a month, can make a big difference. Help because you want to help, not because people think you should, or so you can talk about it to your friends, help because it’s the right thing to do. So get out there, pick a charity, and get going.
You can make a lot of new friends, and contacts
Remember, you’re not the only one that’s volunteering. You can make many new friends that are also volunteering, with the bonus effect of that they are generally nice people. If they were nice, they wouldn’t be volunteering in the first place. So it’s a good way to meet good people. you can also make a lot of contacts this way, and see a different side of the world.
